Raise a Smile is a not-for-profit charity organisation improving the lives of orphans and vulnerable children in Zambia, one of the poorest countries in the world. Our main focus is on education, as we believe that education is the most powerful tool that can be used to escape poverty. Since 2012 we have been teaching children to read in Mfuwe, alongside the government school system. We aim to create a culture of reading, and have created libraries where the children come to learn, and have fun in an otherwise stark world.
Dear Priscilla and the team!
I wish you could be with us opening the boxes! The ooh's and aaah's and wow's are constant.....punctuated with "come and look at this" , "I know who needs this " and pure excitement!!
My friend, and volunteer, Debby and I rushed back from Kapita (our newest library), that has many needs, to open the boxes which had arrived as we left this morning. We are overwhelmed at the amount of amazing goodies and the quality! It is just the most wonderful gift.
I am sure that you all know that feeling of organised chaos that you feel with 56 boxes of assorted goods all in one room....we are now mid chaos, and thinking and planning what next.
We will be taking at least a few things to two of the schools tomorrow.
We cannot thank you enough for the goodies, but also with the thought and time that has gone into packing and transporting them to the ship.
Apparently the ship arrived very late due to troubled seas and typhoon Idai which wrought chaos off the coast as they were due to dock. But all 56 items arrived safely.
