Uyoba Community Library
News from Jenny and Mike
Raise a Smile is a not-for-profit charity organisation improving the lives of orphans and vulnerable children in Zambia, one of the poorest countries in the world. Our main focus is on education, as we believe that education is the most powerful tool that can be used to escape poverty. Since 2012 we have been teaching children to read in Mfuwe, alongside the government school system. We aim to create a culture of reading, and have created libraries where the children come to learn, and have fun in an otherwise stark world.
Lent Giving for Uyoba 2020
In the past few years, we have been delighted with the response from everyone at St James. The generous gifts of new and used books, toys and craft items as well as all the knitting from Crafty Cuppa ladies have amounted to us being able to stack pallets and have them transported by container at no charge by the generosity of the National Police Aid Charity. Unfortunately, this is not able to happen this year without us having to find a lot of money for transport.
Instead, our aim is to raise as much money as possible preferably to buy sets of books which a teacher can use with five children all at once and several one-off books for individual readers. Jenny will then be able to purchase items from a bookshop in Lusaka, the capital, or any of us going to Zambia on a visit could pack some in with their luggage. Ways and means will be found!
